Chapter Sixteen

The night after the funeral, I got a call from Caroline, asking me out for coffee. She said she sensed that I needed a break from work and had such a fun time on our last outing that she didn’t want to wait until I was done with the case before I saw her again. I saw right through this ploy immediately.

“You’ve been talking to your dad, haven’t you?” I asked.

She chuckled. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. You seem stressed. Should we make this a drinking outing instead?”

I laughed. “No, coffee is great. Should we meet at the same place?”

“Let’s do it. Would eight be too early? I have to work at ten.”

I smiled at the thought that she wanted to spend more than twenty minutes with me. “Yeah, that will work. See you then.”

That night, I went to bed with a smile on my face. No matter how confusing the case got, at least I would be able to take brief intermissions to talk to Caroline. My mood was instantly elevated when I hung out around her. Even though I was confident that her father had put her up to this, I didn’t really care. I would take time with Caroline any way I could get it.

The next morning, I showed up extra-early to find her standing in line again.

“I’ll pay for it,” I offered.

“I’m the one who asked you out.” She grinned. “Anyway, it’s already paid for. I got you a medium Americano and a bagel. You should really eat breakfast before working on a tough case. It’s good for your brain.”

I smirked at her and took my coffee when it came to the counter. There was no outwitting Caroline. One day, I’d have to find a way to finally pick up the tab.

The second we sat down, I had a text from Marcie, wishing me a good morning. This was followed by a second text with a winking emoji. Embarrassed, I quickly turned off my phone. I tried to keep my phone on me at all times in case information came up about a case, but I really didn’t need Marcie bugging me while I was on a date.

“What’s that about?” Caroline asked through a bite of her bagel.

“Nothing,” I said hastily. “So, how’s work been going?”

“Pretty good,” she replied. “The clinic is going under some renovations, so it’s been kind of a mess. They’re expanding the boarding area so we had to move some of the kennels closer together. There’s this one cat with us this week that makes the most awful sounds.” She laughed. “I think I’d rather listen to hammering and drilling than hear that cat screech all hours of the day.”

I laughed. “That sounds awful.”

“It really is. We were talking about having it neutered so it would stop, but the owner would probably sue us if we operated on his cat without consent. Until then, we keep the door closed.”

“Sounds eventful,” I said.

“No, what was eventful was the other day when someone brought in their pet tarantula.
